We left Yosemite for the drive to Lake Tahoe via one final drive stopping briefly at Tunnel View, before descending into the valley, crossing the Merced river, and doubling back on ourselves along the northern bank of the river. The route climbed the side of the valley along Big Oak Flat Road, which rapidly gains elevation. The view back down the Merced and into the valley was just stunning, with dark clouds adding to the mood as a storm rolled in from the east. I've never seen a photo of this view before, and so wanted to remember it - I used a Canon 5D MkII and 45mm TSE lens. This marked the start of one of the most scenic drives of my life, and one that doesn't appear in any guide books we'd seen, as we wound our way along the western side of the Sierra mountains on routes 108/120/49, passing through towns like Groveland, and Chinese Camp, heading up to El Dorada and route 50 which would finally take us east to Tahoe.
