A visit to the old mining town of Bodie was always a 50/50 possibility given that all the guide books and web sites said it did not open until May. However, as we approached at the end of the long drive from Tahoe the signs said it was open so we took the ten mile (each way) detour, about 3 miles of which is on a dirt track, to visit one of the highlights of the trip.
Despite the early afternoon timing, the intense sun and bright blue sky, there was lots of opportunity for detail photography in the shadows. The wood used to build the Bodie buildings seems to have this luminous quality, even in the shadows, and is a rich orange colour. I used a 135mm lens to closely frame these detail shots from a distance.
